Convolution Software Requirements and Other Useful Information

  • Convolution software either standalone or more usually run as a plugin within a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) that is capable of loading WAV (.wav) files is the core requirement to use the impulse responses. Optionally, image files (.jpg) which are also supplied can be loaded if the software is able to read the files and display a graphic of the waveform supplied. For example Reverence by Steinberg and Convology XT by Wave Arts/Impact Records) can read jpg files if they are placed in the same folder on your drive as the WAV files. Convology XT also allows a folder named 'images' to contain the jpg files placed in the same folder as the WAV files for convenience

  • .
  • Convolution software can potentially be resource intensive on your computer CPU and RAM so please consider this when running plugins and mindlful that the longer the impulse response time the more computer resource is required. It might be good to know all the impulse responses we have made available can be run easily on a modern computer. The test computer we use is a Apple Mac Studio M2 Max 12 Core CPU with 64 GB RAM running Cubase 14 Pro

  • It is important to note, not all convolution software (plugins) are equal in terms of the maximum duration of impulse response that can be loaded, which can range from a few seconds to unlimited time. Also, some may allow the full duration of a file to be loaded but a limit on the accessible time for playback is restricted. However, it is often possible to time compress the WAV file in some convolution software, for example a 30 second WAV file may be loaded which can be time compressed to 15 seconds to be accessible for playback. Many have a 'time stretch' or similar function to achieve this. Other parameters are usually available within the software to tailor the properties of the impulse response, these may include: EQ / tone, pre-delay or fade in/out time, duration and 'time stretch'. This significantly extends the useful customisation that can be achieved

  • Each Impulse Response Edition is provided with a folder containing images files (jpg) of each impulse response waveform which can be loaded into compatible software. Also the files can be either viewed individually and also in the glossary of the waveforms given in the 'PDF Notes document'.

Examples of waveform images that correspond to impulse response WAV files are shown below:
