Helical Blue Audio Header

Welcome

Hi and welcome to our website. Helical Blue Audio is where we apply our experience in professional audio to a range of products that we are excited to share. We have expertise in field/studio recording, sound design, acoustics, music composition and audio editing.

We aim for original and unique audio creations utilising an extensive range of recording techniques along with our in-house technology including analogue and digital hardware synthesisers, software instruments and effects plugins.

Helical Blue Audio is run by James Muxworthy, conducting most work alone but also collaborating with other musicians and sound professionals as required. Based in the UK in rural Northumberland means there are good opportunities for location recording in a wide range of outdoor recording environments with little noise. Experience in wildlife sound recording also means we have an excellent range of microphones with wind protection suitable for outdoor use in all conditions. Techniques include: Stereo and surround recording using Sennheiser MKH 8000 series and DPA microphones, Binaural head recording, Focused distant recordings with a parabolic reflector, underwater techniques using Hydrophones, vibrational sound with Contact microphones and Ultrasound recording.

James is also a musician and composer using a wide range of electronic and traditional musicial instruments. Compositions often incorprate field recording elements and sound design.

Recent Work. We have completed our first series of Impulse Responses (IR's) for use in convolution software which are available to purchase via our Product page - Impulse Response Series One, where you will also find demo's of a selection of IR's in the 'audio player'. Unlike many (IR's) which are often based on reverberant spaces, we have taken many hours of field recordings, mostly of outdoor environments and then creatively edited the audio to generate several hundred impulse responses. Critically we have aimed to produce many long IR durations in excess of 10 seconds up to around 60 seconds. This has allowed many detailed characteristics to be captured and incorporated into indivdual IR's. We believe this has produced a series of unique high quality IR's which can be used in any commercial convolution reverb or similar software.

It is important to note different commercial convolution reverbs may have limits on the time length of an IR file (WAV file) which can be loaded, this can range from a few seconds to unlimited time duration. We test our IR's in several convolution reverbs including those that enable loading of IR's of 60 seconds or more.
